Girl, You Are Special... But Not That SPECIAL!
Hey Yall', Hey!
In my best DJ Jimi (Where They At) voice... 1-2-3 hit it. 🎶 We gon' start this "thang" off right.🎶
Okay, okay... I have A LOT to say about Black people, Black culture, BLACKNESS, Black women, Black well-being, Black wellness, and Black community. ALL-IN-ALL, BLACK THINGS.
I jumble it all up in what I like to call "social health & wellness." But basically, I’m out here trying to address what happens with African American women. And yeah, high-achieving, over-functioners (many and most are Black women) be' all over the place. It is becasue the stuff we experience is complex, complicated, and difficult to pinpoint as well as discuss. So sometimes what I have to say is gon’ be all over the place too. It all comes together in the end though. The girls that get it, get it.
So what I want to start out with is this:
Girl, we out here fighting all the stuff listed in the above Twitter thread ( I refuse to call it by its new name). So... yeah YOU AIN'T CRAZY.
And let me say it louder for the people in the back—YOU 👏🏾 AIN'T 👏🏾 CRAZY.
High-achieving, over-functioning Black women are out here seeing things, hearing things, and feeling ALL THE THINGS. And yes, sis, even with all that... you still ain’t crazy.
Girl, imma say it, and imma keep saying it time and time again—you ain’t the problem. You just picking up on the fact that something is wrong. Yall' be' like... but in all these situations.... I'm the COMMON DENOMINATOR. Did it ever occur to you that maybe you’ve got an internal radar that picks up on certain tendencies in people and patterns of behavior, no matter the situation?
THE REAL ISSUE IS THERE’S SO MUCH HAPPENING THAT WE DON’T EVEN HAVE THE WORDS OR KNOWLEDGE TO IDENTIFY OR EXPLAIN IT ALL.
And many times, it feels like we’re going insane... because when we look around, and... nobody else seems to be trippin’ but us.
The people around us? They out here suppressing the chaos by disassociating and self-medicating reality away (Ya' girl got bars). Basically, they go' offline to numb their feelings to have to cope with the pain.
So... when you ask them if they see it too, they're going to tell you NO. And you’re gonna' feel alone. Ahhh... loneliness is real.
YOO... JUST BECAUSE THEY DON’T SEE IT, DON’T MEAN IT'S NOT TRUE.
AND NOT CARING, IS NOT THE REMEDY: Being 'unbothered' all the time.. is not it! Because as soon as you go 'offline' too, you start sleepwalking through life. And then wake up only to feel ANGRY and act PETTY.
BECAUSE ALL THAT STUFF STILL GON' BE UNRESOLVED... FURTHER MAKING YOU FEEL CRAZY... BECAUSE IT JUST STAYS IN A LOOP.
THIS JUST MAKES STUFF OPEN SECRETS. WE ALL SEE IT BUT DO NOTHING ABOUT IT.
S/N: This is the story of the longstanding feud between MJ and Prince. It has it all—cussin', foolishness, 'unbotheredness,' pettiness, and conflict that Black folks laugh at now... even though it was trauma.

Yall' we as Black people... really be out here laughing at stuff that is so.. trauma filled (and the sad part is we be' making that joint super hilarious when we get time and space from it).

I have so... much more to say about how we respond to the wild foolishness we see. And I just want Black women to know—it’s not all on you, sis. You can't always be the crazy one. Girl, You Are Special... But Not That SPECIAL!
So yeah, this is definitely gonna have a part 2!
